BIRTHPLACE & HOMEPLACE

  1002 N. McLewean St.,Kinston, NC 28501

Was my birtplace in January of 1929 and where I called home until 1950. During the Korean War I enlisted in the US Air Force, a 4-year enlistment. Three of those years were on an assignment to bases in Germany, nearby Frankfurt and Munich.

Immediately following my discharge, I enrolled at NCSU to chase a B.S. degree in electrical engineering. During my freshman year I married Annie Edwards of Kinston, N.C. who was my lifetime partner for 65 years. With degree in hand, I found employment in Smithfield/Selma area and spent the rest of our years as residents of Smithfield, N.C. Annie passed away in 2020.

About the house. My dad had the house built in 1921 at a cost of about $5000. All exterior wood is yellow pine. The roofing is standing seam galvanized tin and has lasted over 100 years. The reason for lasting this long has been the frequent re-coating with quality paint. I am satisfied the gage(thickness) of the metal is much heavier than used today.
